Venice is a city in north eastern Italy that’s built on around a hundred islands! There is an indescribable charm in this floating city with canals as streets. Be it the eye catching gondola rides, Basilica, bridges or just the view of the Grand canal. Their mode of transportation with water bus or Vaporetto together with the numerous colorful islands makes the visit to this city definitely an unique experience.
St. Mark’s Basilica is one of the famous city’s churches and best known example of Italo-Byzantine architecture. It is also known as ‘the Church of gold’ for it’s gold ground mosaics and opulent designs, which showcased Venetian wealth and power. It stands grand surrounded by Doge’s Palace.
St. Marks’s Campanile is the bell tower of St. Mark’s Basilica, it stands tall just in front of the Basilica and surrounded by Doge’s Palace. Doge’s Palace is built in Venetian Gothic style and was a former residence of the Doge of Venice, the supreme authority of the former Venetian republic. Now it is opened as a museum, since 1923. This square is also called as Piazza San Marco or St. Mark’s square.
Rialto bridge, also called as Ponte di Rialto (Italian) was constructed in 12th century. It was the first bridge spanning the Grand canal, connecting the two sides, San Marco to San Polo. Being rebuilt several times, it is now one of the major touristic places in Venice.
Off about a hundred islands in Venice, there are certain islands that are touristic-ally famous. Murano, Burano, Torcello are a few of those islands. All these islands can be easily reached with their Vaporettos.
We had an opportunity to visit one of these islands, Murano during our visit to Venice. It had everything to give us a best experience of a Venetian island. The journey to Murano from Venice centre was also beautiful, with a sight of number canal crossing bridges and stops at different islands.
A picturesque island, famous yet not as crowded as Venice centre. This allowed a soothing walk along the streets of the island and relaxing time off on the sides of it’s canals.
After our tiring trip under the ever shining Sun 😀 , we settled in a restaurant to relax and fill our tummies with fresh grilled Salmon and gelatino ice cream.
It was one of it’s kind of an experience being in Venice. Though we visited the city in the beginning of June, it was crowded with tourists. The queues for Vaporetto was way too long at important stations, making us stand in the Sun for quite long time. I will say, during touristic seasons, it is better to checkout the option of water taxis or other express services as well if you can afford it so that you really save your energy to enjoy the trip. It would also pay off if you can do some research about the stations to avoid and probably walk to the nearby Vaporetto station instead of waiting for long time at crowded stations. I would say a little effort into better planning is a bit of a necessity when you visit Venice 😉
Despite of anything, I will agree that visit to Venice is definitely a unique experience, amidst it’s narrow canals, bridges, Gondolas, architecture. A truly romantic city 🙂 you need to walk around during off crowd hours.
